Most myths come from simplified marketing, online videos taken out of context, or specs that look meaningful but aren't. Here's what's actually going on behind the language you see on product pages.
Most Safe Myths Come From Marketing Language That Simplifies What's Actually Complex
Safe manufacturers face the same challenge every marketer does. They need to make complex performance differences feel clear and simple on a product page. The result is language like "fireproof," "maximum security," and "48-gun capacity" that communicates confidence without communicating accuracy.
The myths below aren't random. They're the predictable result of marketing pressure meeting a category most people only buy once. Each one leads to a specific type of wrong decision: undersized safe, under-protected safe, or a safe placed and used in a way that undermines what it was built to do. Each correction below is paired with what specifically to do differently.
No Safe Is Fireproof. The Correct Term Is Fire-Resistant.
Product pages, sales descriptions, and even some retailers use the word "fireproof" to describe safes. It implies complete protection from fire damage.
No safe is fireproof. Every fire-rated safe is designed to slow heat transfer, to keep internal temperature below a critical threshold for a defined period under controlled test conditions. Given enough heat, enough time, or fire conditions that exceed the test parameters, the interior of any safe will eventually reach damaging temperatures.
"Fire-resistant" is the accurate term. The fire rating tells you how long the safe delayed heat under a specific test, not that it blocks fire permanently. A 60-minute fire rating means the safe held internal temperature below approximately 350°F for 60 minutes in a furnace test. It doesn't mean your contents are guaranteed to survive any house fire for 60 minutes.
If you choose a safe based on the assumption that "fireproof" means complete protection, you may skip evaluating the fire rating details that actually matter: the internal temperature threshold, who conducted the test, and whether the rating covers the specific items you're storing. Digital media, for example, can be damaged at temperatures well below the standard 350°F threshold most fire ratings are measured against.
Bolt Count Is a Marketing Number. It's Not What Determines Real Resistance.
Safe product pages frequently lead with bolt count ("18 locking bolts," "22-bolt locking system") as a primary security indicator. More bolts appears to mean more protection.
Bolt count is one of the most marketed and least useful specs for evaluating burglary resistance. What actually determines how well a bolt system resists a prying attack is bolt diameter, bolt material, and how many sides of the door the bolts engage. Four well-designed bolts engaging three sides of the door outperform eighteen thin bolts on a single side.
Choosing a safe based on bolt count leads you toward safes that market aggressively rather than build well. The specs that actually indicate bolt quality (diameter, material, engagement direction) are rarely listed prominently because they're harder to make sound impressive. If bolt count is the primary security number on a product page, that tells you what the manufacturer wanted to emphasize, not necessarily what the construction actually supports.
Construction Differences Between Safes Are Real, Significant, and Immediately Obvious in Person
At a similar price point and external size, safes look roughly equivalent online. Same features listed, similar specs, comparable ratings. The assumption follows that the differences are mostly cosmetic or brand-related.
Two safes at the same price point can have meaningfully different steel gauge on the body, different door construction, different bolt systems, and different fire insulation quality. Those differences determine how each safe performs under attack and in a fire, and they're not visible in a product photo.
The fastest way to understand this is to open two safes at different quality levels in person. The door weight, the resistance when you swing it, how solidly it closes, how deeply it recesses into the frame, these are all immediate physical signals of construction quality.
If you assume safes are equivalent, price becomes the only differentiator, and you end up choosing the cheapest option without understanding what you're giving up. The construction differences that determine real protection are exactly the ones that don't show up in an online comparison.
Weight Helps. It Doesn't Replace Anchoring.
A heavy safe, the logic goes, is hard to move. Once it's in the room, a thief won't be able to lift it or carry it out, so bolting it to the floor is overkill. Some buyers skip anchoring to preserve flexibility or to avoid drilling into concrete.
Weight makes a safe harder to carry. It doesn't prevent tipping, repositioning, or slow-and-steady removal by a prepared thief. A 700-pound safe sitting loose on a concrete garage floor can be tipped over with a pry bar. Once it's on its side, the attack geometry changes: thinner panels face up, leverage points shift, and what was a strong safe becomes significantly easier to work on. Weight also doesn't help against a thief with a truck, a winch, and twenty minutes of uninterrupted access.
Anchoring through the pre-drilled holes most safes include takes a few bolts and about 20 minutes into concrete. It's the single cheapest security upgrade available, and it changes the math for anyone trying to tip, reposition, or remove the safe.
Skipping anchoring in favor of "it's heavy enough" is how otherwise well-built safes end up defeated or removed outright. The construction you paid for can only do its job if the safe stays in place while it's being attacked.
Safe Delivery Is One of the Most Technically Demanding Parts of the Process
A safe is a box. Moving it is a matter of getting it from the truck to the room. With a hand truck or dolly and a helper, most people assume they can manage it themselves.
Safe delivery regularly goes wrong in ways that damage the safe, damage the home, and injure people. A 600-pound safe on a staircase isn't just heavy. It's a lever. If it starts to tip on a landing, a furniture dolly and two people without the right training can't recover it.
Beyond the physical risk, a safe that's damaged during delivery may not protect as designed. A dented body, compromised door alignment, or damaged lock mechanism can all affect performance. Size is the most common surprise. A safe that looks appropriately sized in a product photo almost always looks larger in person than expected. The interior capacity gap between the advertised number and the real usable space becomes immediately obvious when you stand in front of it.

Three Quick Myths About Protection Levels Worth Correcting
A few level-related misconceptions come up often enough that they're worth flagging directly. Each one quietly steers buyers toward the wrong safe.
Level myths, corrected
"Higher protection level = always better safe." Not true. Higher protection level means more construction and typically more independent certification, but it also means higher cost and often a safe that's over-specified for the situation. A well-matched Balanced Protection safe in an interior closet can deliver better real-world protection than an over-specified Maximum Protection safe placed poorly or unanchored.
"Maximum Protection is the premium tier, so it's the right goal." Also not true. Maximum Protection is a commercial-grade tier built for situations that genuinely require commercial-grade construction: businesses handling cash, compliance mandates, irreplaceable assets, or specific insurance requirements. Most residential homes don't need this level. When customers come to us asking about Maximum Protection, we've talked more of them down to Enhanced than we've talked anyone up into Maximum.
"Protection level is about the brand, not the situation." Brand correlates loosely with protection level, but the specific model matters more than the brand. Liberty, Browning, and AMSEC each offer models across multiple protection levels. The question isn't "which brand fits my level?" It's "which model at the right protection level fits my situation?"

No. Safes are fire-resistant, not fireproof. Every fire-rated safe is designed to slow heat transfer and delay the rise in internal temperature, not to permanently block heat. A fire rating tells you how long the safe maintained an internal temperature below a defined threshold during a controlled furnace test. "Fire-resistant" is the accurate description.
Does more bolts mean a safer safe?
No. Bolt count is not a reliable measure of burglary resistance. What determines how well a safe resists prying is bolt diameter, bolt material, and how many sides of the door the bolts engage. A safe with fewer large-diameter bolts engaging three sides of the door is more resistant to a real attack than one with many thin bolts on a single side. Can you really tell the difference between safes in person?

A furniture dolly is not adequate for safe delivery. Professional delivery uses specialized equipment and experience with exactly the scenarios where amateur moves fail.
Are expensive safes actually worth the price?
Usually, yes. The price difference between an entry-level and a mid-range safe almost always reflects construction: thicker steel, better door design, more substantial bolt systems, and higher-quality fire insulation. These aren't cosmetic upgrades. They determine how the safe performs under real attack conditions and in a real fire.
